Dr. Jeannie Lee and Stephanie Gomez pose in front of their poster presentation

R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy faculty joined more than 1,800 other pharmacy educators and practitioners to gain new ideas and share expertise.

Among the faculty contributions to the meeting were poster presentations, continuing education sessions, and facilitated discussions about forming a Hispanic Serving Institution collaborative.

Stephanie Gomez, a fourth-year pharmacy student, presented a poster with Assistant Dean of Student Services Jeannie Lee and shared her thoughts on AACP from the student perspective.

What year in school are you?

I’m currently in my 4th year of pharmacy school.

Why did you decide to pursue pharmacy as a career?

I decided to pursue pharmacy as a career because I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare. Since I was in middle school, I would help my Nana with the numerous medications she was prescribed after her kidney transplant. Since she mostly spoke Spanish, there would be a language barrier with the many healthcare professionals she interacted with. I would go with her to her doctor appointments and to the pharmacy in order to help with translating information that was given to her and to translate any questions she had for them. I was able to improve her quality of care by being able to fill in the gap of the language barrier. I took it upon myself to stay up-to-date with her medications, fill her pill boxes, order refills, ask the pharmacist questions for her, and so much more to help her recover. I consider this the start of my path toward becoming a pharmacist. The culmination of experiences with my family led me to pursue education not only in a field that I love but in a field that will allow me to continue learning during my time as a practicing pharmacist.

Why did you attend AACP? And what did you collaborate on with Dr. Jeannie Lee?

I attended the AACP Pharmacy Education conference because the senior research project I am a part of was selected as a finalist in the Trainee Poster Competition. I represented my group which consists of Krupa Bhakta, Luci Reiher, Rikesh Patel, and Dr. Lee is our Principal Investigator (PI) for the project. The senior project is titled “Impact of Different Interview Methods on Pharmacy Student Admissions Process” For this project we held focus group discussions through Zoom with the Classes of 2023 through 2026 in order to assess the perceived effectiveness of the different interview modalities used for the admission interviews of each class. Dr. Lee mentioned to us that the AACP Pharmacy Education conference would be a great opportunity to attend and to present since the focus of this conference is geared towards pharmacy school professors and administrators; our project would be a perfect fit.

What was your impression of AACP?

The AACP conference was wonderful. It was nice being able to meet and speak with pharmacy students and professors from pharmacy schools all around the country. Coming together in order to learn more about ways to improve courses and the quality of education for pharmacy students shows how much the professors and administrators care about their students and their pharmacy programs.

How do you see attending AACP helping you?

Since I was able to attend a multitude of sessions, I was able to fully immerse myself in the experience of this conference. Sitting in on these sessions gave me a new perspective on how our professors are always working towards improving our courses and improving the quality of education. During the sessions we would all be able to share ideas and viewpoints with those that we sat around; I was able to offer the perspective of a student to other professors and they seemed to really be receptive. The part that I enjoyed the most was seeing my own professors be speakers in the sessions and presenting their research, and knowing that not only are they actively looking for ways to improve our education but also sharing their knowledge and findings with other professors around the country.
