Undergraduate Degrees

Choose from two innovative undergraduate majors that allow students to understand healthcare through the lens of medications.

Coit College of Pharmacy offers two innovative undergraduate majors that allow students to understand healthcare through the lens of medications – how they work, how they’re developed, and the direct impact that they have on patients’ health outcomes.  Both majors integrate chemistry, physiology, and biology to provide an interdisciplinary foundation for careers in healthcare, research, industry, and more.

Pharmaceutical Sciences

Focuses on the development and formation of drugs, in addition to understanding the impact those drugs have on the human body. The PharmSci major emphasizes drug design, drug delivery systems, and the chemistry behind pharmaceuticals.

Medical Pharmacology & Toxicology

Focuses on the biological effects of drugs and toxins on living systems, including mechanisms of action, safety, and potential adverse side effects.  PharmTox majors learn how substances interact with biological systems, how they can be used therapeutically, and how they can cause harm.

Which Major is Right for Me?

The Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medical Pharmacology & Toxicology majors prepare students for similar career opportunities, including healthcare (pre-pharmacy, pre-med, pre-dental, etc), research, and industry; however, the differing emphases of the major coursework may make one option a better fit for you.  The PharmSci major focuses on the science behind drugs, and will be uniquely exciting for students planning for careers in pharmaceutical research.  The PharmTox major’s focus on how medications both help and hurt the body may be especially appealing to pre-health students.  That being said, there is no right answer.  Choose whichever major feels like the best fit for you, and then work with an advisor to incorporate any supplemental experiences or courses that may be required for your specific career interest.
