Elective Course FAQs

For registration of all courses on the pre-approved elective list that are outside the Coit College of Pharmacy, complete and submit an Elective Course Enrollment Form.

Whenever you email Amanda Armendariz or Marissa Starks Bahn, please be sure to include your student ID (SID) number.

You are required to take a minimum of 8 units of elective credit.  That might be any combination of 1, 2, or 3-unit courses.  This is a minimum.

Yes, you can take as many elective units as you would like.

No. All courses taken will be counted in your PharmD program for both credit and grade.

No. Elective courses must be taken for the PharmD program only.

No. You may take elective courses in any semester that you feel they fit your schedule best.

Be sure to uncheck the box at the top of the page “Show only classes with available seats.” If the course has restrictions, it will not display if this box is checked.

  • Be sure that you do not have any sort of hold on your account such as, Campus Health, Bursar’s or financial aid.
  • If the course is outside the College of Pharmacy, Barb or Drew will need to enroll you.
  • Complete the Elective Course Enrollment form and email to Amanda Armendariz (Tucson students) or Marissa Starks Banh (Phoenix students).
  • If you will be registering for more than 19 units, you will need permission to take more than the maximum unit load, please email Amanda or Marissa.
  • If it has “Department Consent Required” under Enrollment Information in the class details, contact Amanda or Marissa.

Yes, with college permission.  You will need to complete an Elective Course Petition Form and submit it to the Amanda (Tucson) or Marissa (Phoenix). In the subject of the petition be sure to explain why you wish to take this course and how it relates to pharmacy.

Yes. Be sure to print off the course description or the course syllabus and attach it to the petition.

No. This petition gives approval that the course is related to pharmacy and gives permission to request the units and grade be included in your PharmD program.

Yes, if it is approved on a petition, and it is not offered at the graduation level (500 or above).   If the same course is offered at the graduate level, you must register for the higher-level course.

If you are working for a professor in some capacity, they may offer you independent study units.  You should contact Barb or Drew for further information and registration.
