Q & A

Dr. Bingham stands with Dr. Henderson.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?
- Pay it forward. I learned this from my mentor, Dr. Sandra Leal. She learned this from her mentor, Dr. Metta Lou Henderson. I hope to continue the tradition of leveraging my professional network to expand others’ and help them grow.
In what ways has the role of a pharmacist changed since you started your career?
- The pharmacy profession has undergone a transformation – due in large part to our active involvement in community health initiatives and our response to public health needs. That being said, as pharmacists continue to engage with communities, our role is being refined – not just as dispensers of medication, but as indispensable members of the communities that we serve and to our health care teams.
If you could give one piece of advice to current pharmacy students, what would it be?
- Data is only as good as the questions you ask of it. Student pharmacists should embrace the opportunity to perform research as it has the potential to promote novel innovative practice models that they can leverage in their future practice.
What inspired you to become a pharmacist?
- My desire to become a pharmacist was deeply shaped by my uncle. He was one of many that we lost during the AIDS epidemic. Witnessing his turmoil and limited treatment options available at the time left a lasting impact on me. I saw not only the need for better medications, but also for compassionate care. That experience sparked my commitment to becoming a trusted, empathetic resource for patients in vulnerable moments.
What has been the most rewarding moment in your pharmacy career?
- One of the most rewarding moments of my career was serving on various telehealth task force and advisory groups to develop national policies and expand telehealth delivery during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The culmination of these activities addressed barriers for pharmacists. I’m very proud that it has created new opportunities for the next generation of pharmacists in telehealth pharmacy practice, and to see these efforts extended in the Telehealth Expansion Act today.
