2025 Alumni of the Year - Alan Barreuther, '73 and Christine Barreuther, '77

For the past fifty years the Barreuthers have been members of the PharmCAT community, demonstrating the spirit and values of the college. Since their graduation, Alan and Christine have made remarkable contributions to the college and the field of pharmacy. Their commitment to service extends beyond the pharmacy profession, reflecting a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the community. Congratulations to Alan and Christine for their outstanding achievements and dedication to the world of pharmacy practice and education.
Alan Barreuther, R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy - Class of 1973
Alan Dan Barreuther earned a bachelor’s in science from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in 1973. He went on to complete a doctorate from the University of Michigan’s academic program along with the University of Michigan Medical Center Pharmacy Resident program in 1975.
Alan returned to Tucson and taught at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy from 1975 to 1991. He established clinical pharmacy roles at University Medical Center in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine, and he moved to educate students and expand clinical pharmacy roles at Tucson Medical Center. He also helped establish the Arizona Poison Control and Drug Information Center and expand it from a local entity to a statewide operation. He joined Health Partners HMO in 1991 and Southwestern Physicians Network in 1996.
In 2000, Alan was employed in the medical affairs departments of four pharmaceutical companies, and he retired in 2015. In retirement, he became a volunteer for Casa de la Luz Hospice and a board member and president of the Casa de la Luz Foundation, now known as Roots and Roads Community Hospice Foundation.
Alan received the Elias Schlossberg Lecture Award in 1991 and became a fellow of the American Society of HealthSystem Pharmacists in 1995. He worked as a volunteer with the American Lung Association of Arizona for over 30 years. In 2017, he received the Bowl of Hygeia Community Service Award, and in 2021 he received the Jack R. Cole, Ph.D., Distinguished Alumnus Award from the U of A R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy.
Christine Barreuther, R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy - Class of 1977
Christine Jane Barreuther graduated from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in 1977 and completed a clinical pharmacy residency at the Phoenix Veterans Administration Hospital in 1978. Upon returning to Tucson, she worked at Kino Hospital before joining the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Health Care System and working there for 33 years. While at the VA, she received numerous patient care awards, including the VA Secretary Hearts and Hands award for exemplifying a commitment to providing care and needed health care services for veterans. After retirement from the VA, she became a certified diabetes management educator and worked part time for El Rio Health Care Center and Clinica Amistad, a clinic for the uninsured and underserved populations, in diabetes management.
Christy has been a volunteer for a variety of organizations, including Arizona Lung Association Asthma Camps in Prescott, Girl Scouts and Catholic Social Services programs. Most recently, she serves on the U of A’s College of Pharmacy Alumni Council, and she was recently selected for the Arizona State Museum Director’s Council.
Alan and Christy recently established the Christine J. and Alan D. Barreuther Scholarship Endowment at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy. They are the proud parents of two daughters who are both U of A alumni.
