"PFAS and Diabetic Kidney Disease: Is Albuminuria More Than an Outcome?"
PFAS have been associated with kidney disease in some epidemiologic studies, and experimental models support potential nephrotoxic effects, yet human findings remain inconsistent. This presentation explores how PFAS–albumin interactions and altered albumin handling in kidney disease may shape PFAS toxicokinetics and our understanding of their potential kidney effects. We use toxicokinetic-informed models to examine how albuminuria influences circulating PFAS concentrations, then evaluate albuminuria as an effect modifier of PFAS–kidney associations in the TODAY cohort. Finally, we integrate single-cell RNA sequencing of human kidney tissue to investigate cellular and molecular responses to PFAS exposure.
