“Neuronal Functions of the RNA-Binding Protein TDP-43 and Its Dysfunction in Neurodegerative Diseases”
TDP-43 is an RNA-binding protein well-conserved in multi-cellular organisms. Maintenance of the normal sequence/ structure and appropriate expression level of the protein is indispensable for the functions of a variety types of cells including the neurons. Consequently, mis-metabolism of TDP-43 would lead to the development of a range of neurodegenerative diseases with TDP-43 proteinopathies including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
In this talk, I will first introduce the neuronal functions of TDP-43 and then describe how its dysfunction results in the degeneration of neurons. Finally, I will present our recent efforts on the uses of two mouse models to develop a new hematopoietic stem cell-based blood therapy of ALS with TDP-43 proteinopathies (ALS-TDP).
