American College of Veterinary Pharmacists (ACVP)

The American College of Veterinary Pharmacists was established in order to support the efforts of independent pharmacists in developing and

 strengthening the services they provide for animals as well as strengthening the support services they provide for veterinarians – assisting them in meeting the needs of their practices. ACVP develops and disseminates educational materials and programs, serves as an information resource and works closely with allied organizations to enhance the veterinary pharmacy care offered by pharmacy practitioners.

Pharmacists in managed care are involved in developing and implementing comprehensive programs that deliver effective medication therapies and specific patient-care services to achieve positive patient outcomes. Learning managed care principles will help you to develop and further your career, no matter which field of pharmacy you choose to practice.

Mission

  • To provide students with programs and services which add to the educational experiences of the college curriculum, concentrating on medications available within the veterinary space
  • To provide students with the tools and resources beyond the student level, exposing students to veterinary pharmacy opportunities
  • To support the goals and objectives of the national organization, the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists.

Activities

Veterinarian Shadowing Program
The mission of the Veterinarian Shadowing Program is to give ACVP members the opportunity to gain exposure to veterinary pharmacology in the setting of local veterinary hospitals. This includes exposure to both inpatient and outpatient veterinary medications. This program is exclusive to ACVP members.

Annual Veterinary and Pharmacy Student Competition
Each year in the Spring, teams of 2 consisting of one veterinary student and one pharmacy student compete in a Kahoot style competition. Questions include mechanism of action, PK, dosing, adverse effects, toxicity, indication, and more.
