Latinas in Medicine, Why Representation Matters

Dr. Valenzuela will review demographic trends of physicians in Arizona and the broader US and identify areas of growth and gaps in the medical workforce. Through personal storytelling, Dr. Valenzuela will explore challenges faced by many Latinas in pursuing a career in medicine. She will additionally highlight the impact that underrepresentation within the medical profession has on health care outcomes.

Dr. Valenzuela completed medical school and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson. Following residency, she joined a private practice group in Tucson, where she enjoyed providing general obstetrics and gynecologic care to underserved areas of our community. Dr. Valenzuela is currently serving in the role of vice dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion at COMT. In this capacity, she oversees the practice of inclusive excellence for students, resident, fellows, staff - including leadership-, and faculty in collaboration with the designated offices for admissions, education, student affairs, and faculty affairs.
