Let's Get To Know Shelby
What drew you to work at an academic institution?
- I grew up in Tucson and have always been interested in the history of the University of Arizona and its impact on the Tucson community. After graduating in 2023, I was excited at the opportunity to stay on campus as an employee. I’m a first-generation college graduate, and getting to support students, faculty, staff, and alumni in my role is a great way to stay involved and give back.
What do you like to do in your free time?
- I like any crafts I can get my hands on! I’ve taught myself painting, sewing, crocheting, and even sculpting over the last ten years. Miniatures are my favorite projects because I love the detail and precision that goes into them.
What has been the most rewarding part of working at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy?
- I get to work with a lot of alumni of the college, and it’s fascinating to see how people have remained connected to the U of A throughout their careers. Getting to hear those stories and help people leave a legacy in the community is always a highlight for me.
How would you describe your role to someone unfamiliar with your work?
- I work in Development and Communications, which means I interact with alumni throughout their whole journey with the college. Because I help with alumni relations and stewardship, events, and college communications, I’ve had the chance to speak with current students, celebrate graduating classes, welcome class reunions, and connect with past graduates who want to create an impact on future pharmacists. I have a unique opportunity in my role to facilitate the entire journey from student to alumni emeritus.
Can you tell us about a recent project or initiative you’ve been involved with that you’re particularly proud of?
- Recently I’ve taken on the task of interviewing and writing news articles focused on our PharmD and BSPS students. We are always looking to spotlight our future pharmacists on our website and social media, and getting to hear from them firsthand reinforces everything I’ve heard about the amazing work they do. I am also a co-chair of our 2024 Homecoming Committee, and am looking forward to seeing all of our PharmCats at our college events this month!
