What inspired you to pursue a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences?

Pursuing a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences offers numerous compelling reasons. Firstly, it provides a deep understanding of the scientific principles underlying drug development, manufacturing, and usage. This knowledge is crucial in addressing global health challenges and my ultimate desire to contribute to advancements in medical treatments. Coming from a high school bioscience program, I was fortunate to have been exposed to advanced science courses and research opportunities which blossomed my curiosity for the understanding of how medications affect the body. Moreover, the pharmaceutical industry is dynamic and continually evolving, offering a sense of purpose as professionals contribute to improving patient outcomes and public health. With the increasing emphasis on personalized medicine and cutting-edge technologies, such as biotechnology and nanotechnology, I look forward to pursuing a career in a field that remains at the forefront of scientific innovation.

Could you share your career aspirations and explain how the Pharmaceutical Sciences major will contribute to achieving your goals?

A degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences opens doors to a diverse range of career opportunities which allows me to continue exploring opportunities while gaining a valuable education. Whether I choose a career as a physician, pharmacist or in research I am confident that the knowledge I will gain from my major will translate well in my graduate studies. Additionally, the pharmaceutical sector provides several career options. The demand for skilled professionals in areas like drug development, regulatory compliance, and quality control is consistently high. Pursuing a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, therefore, not only aligns with a passion for science and healthcare but also offers a variety of pathways with a rewarding and impactful career.

What aspects of the Pharmaceutical Sciences major have surprised or excited you the most?

I was pleasantly surprised when exploring the courses offered within the Pharmaceutical Sciences major. Multiple options can be personalized to fit the overall goals of any student. Whether I want to pursue medical school or consider a job in regulatory affairs, there are classes that support my end goal. Before selecting my major, I explored several other options within the university, but the Pharmaceutical Sciences major stood out because of the amazing faculty advisors and professors. As a smaller major, you get personalized attention and guidance. I appreciate when my professors remember my name, offer support, and root for my success. I have also met several like-minded individuals who I know will become my lifelong friends.

Beyond academics, which extracurricular activities or organizations have you participated in, and what motivated your involvement?

As a freshman, I have spent most of my first semester acclimating to living on my own and adapting to the University lifestyle. I have joined the Bollywood dance team as a way to connect with my cultural background and my passion for dance. As a Flinn Scholar, I enjoy spending time with my fellow scholars and we often meet up for planned events. We also will be traveling to Finland soon to study the education system over there. I have also joined several clubs on campus and hope to get involved in community outreach within the Tucson area. Additionally, I am excited to begin research soon within the Bio5 research labs. With so many opportunities, the University of Arizona has something for everyone.

Are there specific areas or challenges within the field of pharmacy that particularly interest you?

There are specific areas within the field of pharmacy that interest me. Since I am a freshman, there are still so many opportunities and classes for me to explore. Right now my interest is in psychiatric drugs and the social construct surrounding them. I worked in a psychiatric office during high school, so I hope to learn more about the drugs I saw being prescribed. Understanding how drugs interact with the body is also extremely interesting, so I look forward to taking classes around that topic.

Could you please highlight some of the most rewarding academic experiences you've had so far within the Pharmaceutical Sciences major?

Currently, I am enrolled in PCOL 196D (Joy of Drugs). This introductory seminar has been the highlight of my semester! I have learned something new and fascinating in each class and have already been able to apply what I have learned in my everyday life. Seeing the different ways my major can be applied makes me excited to continue my journey and education as a Pharmaceutical Sciences major.
