UA Health Sciences Senior Vice President Michael Dake has announced the completion of Dean Schnellmann’s ABOR-required, 5-Year Administrator Review.

The goal of the 5-Year Review is to provide feedback and leadership development for the administrator to assist them in setting goals for the next several years. A 5-year review is not required nor anticipated if an administrator will not be renewed in accordance with the process outlined in UHAP 5.4.

The review focused on an assessment of the Dean Schnellmann’s performance in the following areas:

  1. Building trust by communicating a guiding vision, operating in an ethical manner, being accessible and responsive, maintaining composure, and acknowledging the lessons to be learned from missteps;
  2. Fostering collaboration by effectively managing conflicts, forging partnerships and advancing shared purposes in a manner that includes diverse perspectives in collaborative decision making;
  3. Maximizing resources by recruiting and retaining high quality coworkers, helping them develop through coaching and assessment, improving operational effectiveness, and advancing data-based planning;
  4. Achieving results by identifying opportunities, challenging received assumptions, taking strategic risks, and advancing innovations in a decisive and strategic manner that is attuned to the priorities of the unit and university.
  5. Inclusive excellence by embedding diversity, inclusivity and equity into the structural/institutional aspects of the unit, which may include recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body, fostering access to opportunity within the unit, encouraging diverse perspectives, and creating a welcoming and supportive campus climate through visibility, communication and education.

The committee’s review process followed UArizona’s guidelines. All data was confidentially collected by the committee throughout the duration of the review, prior to creating the final report. The 5-Year 360 Administrator Survey was deployed via email and distributed to the entire college; there were 66 total respondents. The committee supplemented this information with several open office hours (for interested faculty, staff and students), focus groups and individual meetings. The committee met often to discuss the findings from these different sources.

The committee and Dr. Dake agreed with the Dean’s accomplishments. Of note are his successful philanthropy, his advancement of research and College rankings, and his development of new centers and programs. In addition, several educational programs were enlarged or started under his leadership. The committee acknowledged that Dean Schnellmann has modeled integrity and professionalism in his interactions. We agreed that his leadership has successfully addressed the significant College challenges that he inherited, and that his efforts have enhanced the College’s national reputation, research footprint, educational programs and overall impact. We discussed opportunities for improvement in communication and engagement. With this input, in the near future, Dr. Schnellmann will review the goals for the next 5-years.

"I am grateful to the committee and Vera Madril for the hard work and dedication they displayed during this review process. Their exceptional collaboration and committed engagement provided wise direction, sage advice, and critical guidance; all crucial ingredients that will contribute to the College of Pharmacy’s future success," said Dr. Dake.
