Dr. Christopher Hulme is director of medicinal chemistry at the BIO5 Translational Drug Discovery Center and is focused on small molecule drug design and developing enabling chemical methodologies to expedite the drug discovery process. The development of small molecule inhibitors of kinases is of particular interest. Projects are highly collaborative in nature, and students are exposed to the full array of design hurdles involved in progressing molecules along the value chain to clinical evaluation.

Laurence Hurley, PhD, professor emeritus, College of Pharmacy Drug Discovery and Development, specializes in the design and development of antitumor agents. He started three biotech companies and presently serves as CEO of Reglagene, LLC, which develops small-molecule medicines to fight disease. Hurley has published extensively in the area of chemical biology, most recently about targeting transcriptional control through quadruplexes.

Dr. Ieng is an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and a pharmacy director at Banner Health. Dr. Ieng graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Memphis. Dr. Ieng is also a preceptor for both the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and Midwestern University College of Pharmacy. He is a recipient of the 2020 Rookie Preceptor of the Year at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy.

Bruce Johnson maintains the college's database operations in support of the administration's accounting, fund-raising, and other activities. He also provides database support for other parts of the college as needs evolve. He generally gets drafted to help out on everything else associated with computers in the college. There is a lot of computing power here in the college, and it is IT's job is to put that power into the hands of the people who can use it, in such a way that they CAN use it.

Bill Jones received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from The College of Pharmacy at the University of Arizona in 1972 and 1979, respectively. He began his pharmacy career as a Commissioned Officer in the US Public Health Service (1972-1976). He was the Pharmacy Program Manager for Clinical Services at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System for 28 years and was the Residency Program Director from 1983-2006. He also was the Education, Research, and Performance Improvement Pharmacist for the VA Central Office for 3 additional years.

Dr. Karnes' primary area of research interest is cardiovascular pharmacogenomics, specifically investigating the utility of genetic polymorphisms to predict toxicities of cardiovascular drugs. He employs a translational approach to investigate pharmacogenomic associations using observational studies, functional genomics techniques, and eventually prospective clinical trials. His ultimate career goal is to facilitate personalized cardiovascular medicine and genotype-guided prescribing to avoid serious cardiovascular drug toxicities.

Dr. Michael Katz is a Professor in the College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, Director of Residency Programs and Director of International Programs. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky and completed his residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1979.  He is the Residency Program Director for the PGY2 Internal Medicine program at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy/Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.

Richard completed a master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California in 1973. He also has a bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Arizona.
