Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotations are completed in the fourth year of the PharmD curriculum after students have completed their didactic coursework.
The purpose of APPE rotations is to provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and develop the skills required of a practicing pharmacist. Each student has seven six-week rotation assignments in a variety of practice settings. There are four required rotations:
- Community Practice
- Hospital/Health Systems
- Ambulatory Care
- Adult Acute Care
Required Rotations
General Medicine
The purpose of the General Medicine rotation (formerly known as the Adult Acute Care rotation) is to allow students to gain experience and develop skills in various roles in which a pharmacist contributes to patient care in an inpatient setting.
Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
The purpose of the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice (PhPr 803) Rotation is to allow students to develop skills and gain experience in various roles in which a pharmacist contributes to patient care in outpatient settings.
Community Pharmacy
The purpose of the Community Pharmacy Practice (PhPr 803) rotation is for students to gain experience in various aspects of community pharmacy practice. This may include, but is not limited to, provision of products, clinical pharmacy services, and pharmacy management.
Hospital/Health-Systems Pharmacy
The purpose of the Hospital/Health-Systems Pharmacy Practice (PhPr 803) rotation is for students to gain experience in various aspects of inpatient pharmacy services. This may include, but is not limited to, provision of products to patients and other hospital/clinic departments, clinical pharmacy services, and pharmacy management.
