PGY1 Pharmacy Practice & Community


The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy/El Rio Health is a 12-month program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The ambulatory care program was established in 2009 and the community program in 2016.

A pharmacist completing the programs will be well-prepared to serve as the next generation of patient care leaders in an outpatient setting. The experiences over the course of the year are designed to not only improve your clinical skills, but develop your vision and leadership style.  Successful residents will be prepared to enter practice, pursue advanced training in a PGY2 residency or fellowship, and be prepared for board certification. Upon successful completion of the residency program, a certificate will be awarded to the resident by the college and the clinic.

About the Program: 

The program emphasizes outpatient clinical practice consisting of nine months of core (required) learning experiences in specific aspects of pharmacy practice and three months of elective opportunities. These core and elective learning experiences will provide the basic foundation for quality clinical practice. In addition, this program enables the resident to learn and apply teaching and research techniques.

Clinical Responsibilities: 

The resident will participate in safe, evidence-based, compassionate, and cost-effective patient care. Our mission is to provide exceptional care to underserved patients and the resident should be passionate about this endeavor. All patient care activities are completed under the supervision of attending pharmacists and commensurate with the resident’s level of training as determined by the residency program. The resident will communicate effectively with supervising attending pharmacists regarding his/her patient evaluation, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and plan of care and intended therapeutic interventions. Additionally, the resident will provide oral and written consultations focused on improving patient outcomes and enhancing communication with the health care team. 

Academic Responsibilities: 

The resident is required to participate in the longitudinal Teaching Certificate (PRSTL) Program. The resident is also responsible for the development, implementation, and completion of a research project. The objective is to develop the resident's skills in problem identification, investigation, and solution. Each project must be approved by the residency program director. The results will be presented at the APhA Annual Meeting and AzPA Southwestern States Conference. After completion of data collection and analysis, the resident will be responsible for drafting a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Weekend Staffing/On-call Responsibilities: 

The resident will staff ever 3rd Saturday at our pharmacies at El Rio. There are no on-call responsibilities. However, given the focus of the program, nights and weekends will be dedicated to project work as clinic hours will have a patient care focus.   

Benefits and Financial Provisions: 

The salary for this program is competitive with similar residency programs nationwide. The resident is entitled to all benefits provided to full-time El Rio Health appointed personnel. Funds will be provided to help offset travel expenses to selected state and national meetings.

Salary: $47,659

The University of Arizona Residency Programs participate in the ASHP-associated Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) for applications and the National Matching Service (NMS) for the residency matching process.
