Richard Katz, BS '70, Named Pharmacy Alumni of the Year

Richard Katz is an entrepreneur, a leader in the pharmaceutical industry, and generous donor to the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. Since 2004, he has been a member of the college’s National Advisory Board, having served as chair from 2009 to 2018.

His career might have been different without the guidance he received at the UA. Rick shared his experience with College of Pharmacy Professor Jack Cole. “ (He) recognized an intelligent student not applying himself. Rather than embarrass the student in class, he asked for a private meeting. ... He taught me to focus and persevere and mentored me in a way that has had a long-lasting effect on who I have become. I am forever grateful for his insight.”

In 1975, Rick co-founded ModernHEALTH, a patient-centered specialty pharmacy company. He has been its CEO for over 40 years, managing its growth from five employees and less than $1 million in sales to over 10,000 employees and over $250 million in sales.

Together with his wife, Rick established the Richard and Nancy Katz PharmD Scholarship at the college for students demonstrating financial need, leadership ability and a commitment to patient care. He also provided one of the first major gifts to meet a challenge grant to expand and renovate the college’s Skaggs Pharmaceutical Sciences building. As a leader of the challenge grant, he personally contacted other members of the advisory board as well as former classmates to encourage their support.

For his leadership in the industry and his dedicated support of the college, the UA Alumni Association is pleased to name Richard Katz its 2018 Alumnus of the Year for the College of Pharmacy.
