Global Brigades is the world's largest nonprofit student-led global health and sustainable development organization.
Since 2004, Global Brigades has mobilized thousands of university students and professionals through nine skill-based service programs to improve quality of life in under resourced communities. Medical Brigades develop sustainable health initiatives and provide relief where there is limited access to healthcare.
The professional chapter of Global Medical Brigades at the University of Arizona organizes interprofessional medical brigades to Honduras, Panama, and Ghana. In 2010, the professional chapter participated in its first medical/dental brigade where brigaders were able to provide health and dental care to 601 underprivileged Hondurans in the small village of Coyolito. Since then, the professional chapter has participated in a second medical/dental brigade to Honduras. In Honduras, seven pharmacy students, one MPH student, one nursing student and two RNs, one PA along with 58 pre-health undergrads organized and ran two successful medical/dental brigades in the underprivileged communities of Mercedes Chirina and El Higuerito where we provided medical and dental care to 697 and 904 patients, respectively.
In May 2012, the professional chapter successfully expanded to Ghana, completing its first medical/dental/public health brigade there. Three pharmacy students, one nursing student, one public health student and one College of Pharmacy staff member, along with 15 pre-health undergrads and three medical professionals, organized and ran a medical/dental/public health brigade in and underprivileged community in the Mfantseman District. We were able to provide care to 645 patients in the rural community of Otabanadze, Central Region, Ghana. This year we are excited to announce that we are expanding to Panama!
The main goal of this organization is to encourage interprofessional, team-based healthcare and we strive to work with medical, pharmacy, nursing, and public health students as well as medical professionals to provide access to healthcare in rural communities in Honduras, Panama and Ghana.
