Do we know how to party, or what? On Sept. 18, the College of Pharmacy threw a “welcome back” picnic for all students, faculty and staff to celebrate the new academic year. More than 300 people attended the shindig, which was held on the Walkway of Wellness at Drachman Hall.
A duo of steel drum musicians from the UA College of Fine Arts set the mood with tropical music as the college family gathered among tables festooned with red and blue tablecloths and balloons. Kevin Boesen, director of the Medication Management Center and assistant professor, welcomed the crowd and invited them to chow down on freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs, potato salad, fruit, ranch beans, cookies and soft drinks.
While everyone was finishing lunch, Boesen returned to the microphone and explained the reasons for the picnic.
“We are here to celebrate the return of YOU, the students. It gets lonely in the summer without you. And we’re celebrating the college’s 65th birthday. Happy birthday, COP! And we’re recognizing student Jenn Poist, who just returned from the London Paralympics, and her predecessor at the games, Renee Tyree, Class of 1993.”
Boesen went on to say that although Poist and Team USA (wheelchair basketball) did not win a medal at the Paralympics, Poist would always be a champion to the college. He then presented a medal to Poist and bouquets of flowers to both Poist and Tyree.
Boesen also thanked the sponsors of the event, The Medicine Shoppe, represented at the picnic by Greg Rogan, co-owner, Alex German, and Jose Miranda; and Fry’s Pharmacy, represented at the picnic by Lanre Lanre-Kolawole.
The event went off without a hitch, thanks in large part to Barb Collins, director of student services, and her helpers. Everyone was also grateful for the beautiful, temperate Tucson fall day.
