Awards to be presented at Homecoming 2013 announced

November is around the corner, and fall in Tucson brings cooler temperatures, football and most importantly, Homecoming!

A number of luminaries will receive awards at a brief presentation during the college’s Homecoming reception on Friday evening, Nov. 8. The reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on the lawn south of Drachman Hall. This event is free, but be sure to register so we can plan wisely.

We hope you will attend and congratulate the award recipients.

College of Pharmacy Awards

Michael and Kathryn Kalsman have been selected to receive the college’s Jack R. Cole, PhD, Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2013. Michael is a BS Pharmacy alumnus from 1953. One of their nominators stated that “It goes without saying that these two come as a pair.” Michael and Kathryn have practiced pharmacy in Arizona for close to 60 years. They owned and operated Kachina Pharmacy in Yuma for more than 20 years. Both have been awarded the Bowl of Hygeia.

Theodore G. Tong, PharmD, has been chosen to receive the college’s Findlay E. Russell Distinguished Citizen Award for 2013. Tong wears many hats at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. He is the associate dean of academic and student affairs, a professor and executive director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center. He is also the current honorary president of the American Pharmacists Association. One nominator says of Tong: “If you ask a student pharmacist about Ted, you will hear nothing but praise for him.”

Allen Lew, PharmD 1972, has been selected to receive this year’s Danny and Rae Jacob Award for Pharmacy Practice. Lew spent more than 17 years as chief pharmacist at Thrifty Drugs and is supervising pharmacist for the outpatient pharmacyat Tucson Medical Center, where he has worked for 22 years. Lew has been president of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Lew and his wife spend their free time raising funds for the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, Sunnyside District Foundation and the Arizona Arthritis Association.

Alumni Association Award

Smiling white man with glasses & receding hairlineJack R. Cole, PhD, has been chosen by the University of Arizona Alumni Association for its Alumnus of the Year Award for the College of Pharmacy. Cole has a long and significant history with the college. A BS graduate from the Class of 1953, he was the dean from 1977 to 1990, and retains the honorific of dean emeritus. He is currently a professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. Cole was instrumental in the college’s move into the Skaggs Pharmaceutical Sciences Center and, in 1981, in having the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program approved as an option for pharmacy students. In 1989, he served as UA provost. He receives high praise from one of his nominators, who stated: “Jack R. Cole has a long and prestigious history with the University of Arizona and the College of Pharmacy. He has been the ultimate scholar, leader and mentor to many.”
