MMC applies for URAC drug therapy management accreditation

Tucson, Ariz. – The University of Arizona Medication Management Center announced today that it is applying for Drug Therapy Management Accreditation from URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based health-care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health-care industry. URAC’s Drug Therapy Management Accreditation standards provide assurance to patients, providers, purchasers, regulators and employers that the practices of the organization performing these services are fair and equitable for all parties.

“We have always been dedicated to quality medication management processes,” said Kevin Boesen, PharmD, director of the Medication Management Center. “By applying for accreditation under URAC’s drug therapy management standards, we are going one step further toward demonstrating our commitment to quality and accountability.”

The Medication Management Center is a pharmacist-run call center established in 2006 at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. Pharmacists at the center have extensive experience delivering clinical services to Medicare Part D beneficiaries who have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, hyperlipidemia or diabetes. Since 2006, the center has delivered medication therapy management services to more than 1 million Medicare beneficiaries nationwide.

Drug therapy management is an expanding, ever more complex and necessary function in the health-care system. Recognizing this, URAC introduced the first-ever standards for DTM organizations.

“By choosing to seek URAC Drug Therapy Management Accreditation, the Medication Management Center has displayed leadership through a commitment to quality and accountability,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO.

URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is a leader in promoting health-care quality through accreditation and certification programs. URAC’s standards keep pace with the rapid changes in the health-care system, and provide a mark of distinction for health-care organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability. Through its broad-based governance structure and an inclusive standards development process, URAC ensures that all stakeholders are represented in setting meaningful standards for the health-care industry.
