Pharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics

Pharmaceutics deals with the design and development of pharmaceutical dosage forms. At Arizona, emphasis is placed on non-oral (i.e., topical, injectable, and inhalation) dosage forms and novel drug delivery systems. photo of medications

Formulations are developed that maximize the bioavailability and/or the stability of the active ingredient. This involves the study of the factors that govern solubility in aqueous and non-aqueous vehicles. It also involves the development of stability indicating assays and the study of the effects of formulation components on physical and chemical stability.

The degree offered in this track is the doctor of philosophy (PhD) in pharmaceutical sciences with an emphasis in pharmaceutics.  There is not a master's program offered at this time.

The goal of the PhD program is to provide the student with an advanced knowledge base and extensive research skills in the area of pharmaceutical sciences. A dissertation based upon original research is required for the PhD degree. Students are required to select a minor field of study. Acceptable minor fields for doctoral students include biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, pharmacology, toxicology or physiology.

Admission requirements
Individuals with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy, chemistry, engineering or physical or biological science are encouraged to apply. Students should have taken:

Calculus--2 semesters
Life Sciences--2 semesters
Organic Chemistry--2 semesters
Analytical Chemistry--1 semester

Certain prerequisites may be waived.
