MS in Clinical Research Courses

Required Courses

EPID 651 Bioethics, Regulations, Repercussions in Research

Introduction and applications of clinical research principles in bioethics; includes history of research ethics, human subjects research, responsible conduct, good clinical practice, genetic research ethics, international research and investigator's role in research and vertebrate animals.

PHSC XXX Introduction to Clinical Research

PCOL 631 Pharmagenetics and Pharmacogenomics

Pharmacogenetics is the study of the effect of variation in a single gene on response to a therapeutic agent. Pharmacogenomics extends pharmacogenetics to include the effects of multiple genes and genome wide analysis. Topics include changes in gene expression induced by chemicals, how genetic information impacts the development and use of drugs as well as ethical, legal and social issues associated with using genetic information.

EPID 652 Grantsmanship for a Winning Proposal

Presents skills needed to write competitive biomedical research grants, prepare budgets, identify funding sources, understand peer review processes, and deliver effective scientific presentations; students will write an NIH grant proposal to be reviewed internally.

EPID 576a Biostatistics in Public Health
This course introduces biostatistical methods and applications, and will cover descriptive statistics, probability theory and a wide variety of inferential statistical techniques that can be used to make practical conclusions about empirical data. Students will also be learning to use a statistical software package (STATA).

EPID 576b Biostatistics for Research
Descriptive statistics and statistical inference relevant to biomedical research, including data analysis, regression and correlation analysis, analysis of variance, survival analysis, biological assay, statistical methods for epidemiology and statistical evaluation of clinical literature.

PHSC 596E Graduate Seminar
The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports and/or papers.

PHSC 910 Thesis

Electives Approved by Major Advisor (See Possible Electives Below)

EPID573a  Basic Principles of Epidemiology
Course will introduce students to the basic concepts and principles of epidemiology and how these concepts are applicable for their own particular interests and careers in epi related fields.

EPID 573B Epidemiologic Methods
This course will increase the student's understanding of research methods in epidemiology and provide practice for the epidemiology student to design research studies and review other epidemiologic research designs.

PCOL 601  Genomics and Proteomics

Lecture and laboratory on the qualitative and quantitative effects of toxic substances on mammalian genes and proteins. Modern instrumental techniques will be employed whenever appropriate. Lecture may be taken separately by non-majors. Toxicology majors take lecture/laboratory       .

PHSC 511  Health Care and Health Policy
History, organization and administration of health care services.

PHSC 513 Health Technology Assessment
Provides an overview of methods in health technology assessment, including cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis. Current controversies in technology assessment are discussed. Emphasis will be placed on critical assessment of the published literature.

PHSC 543 Health Services Research Methods
Design and evaluation of health services research. Application of scientific, ethical and methodological principles to the investigation of research questions regarding health and health care delivery.

PHSC 544  Pharmaceutical Policy
Survey of public and private policies affecting the development, availability and use of pharmaceuticals in the U.S. and other countries.

PHSC 612  Patient-Reported Health Outcomes
Survey of the theory, measurement and applications of patient-reported health outcomes, specifically health-related quality of life and consumer assessments of health care.

PHSC 621a  Applied Health Technology Assessment
Application of the methodologies and tools used in the assessment of health technologies. Included are the application of decision analytic tools and techniques as well as methodologies such as cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit and cost-utility analysis.

PHSC 670  Principles in Drug Discovery, Design, and Development
An introduction into principles of drug discovery, design, and development covering the process and tools such as computational chemistry, combinatorial chemistry and subjects such as molecular target identification, drug receptor interactions, DNA and proteins as molecular targets, drug metabolism, and drug delivery systems.
