Introduction
Grant H. Skrepnek, PhD, RPh, is an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, and additionally serves as an investigator within The Center for Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomic Research. Dr. Skrepnek received his BS, MS, and PhD in pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin, completing his doctoral minor area studies in finance and his master’s minor area studies in management.
Research
As faculty at The University of Arizona, Dr. Skrepnek’s research agenda broadly involves pharmaceutical economics, policy, and outcomes. From a clinical stance, Dr. Skrepnek focuses upon pharmacoeconomics and outcomes within oncologic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, mental health, infectious diseases. Furthermore, he is engaged in advancing the methodological and statistical approaches used within assessments of health technology. His interests extend to policy issues concerning Schumpeterian and industrial organization economics, strategic management, financial asset valuation, and technological change in the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, he has conducted research involving mergers and acquisitions, risk and return of pharmaceutical research and development, firm-level determinants and valuation of innovative activity within the drug sector, the commercialization of biotechnology, venture capital, and the econometrics of the financial markets. Dr. Skrepnek also studies practice-related aspects of pharmacy which include drug safety, patient compliance and adherence, disease management, and the use of technology by clinicians. He has received funding from numerous organizations and is an ongoing co-investigator within The University of Arizona's Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERT) drug-drug interactions core funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Teaching
Currently, Dr. Skrepnek teaches and coordinates PHPR 842 (Professional Practice Management) in the PharmD curriculum, which surveys principles of pharmacoeconomics, corporate finance, leadership, and organizational behavior. Within the graduate program, he teaches PHSC 513 (Health Technology Assessment) and PHSC 544 (Pharmaceutical Policy). The student research supervision that Dr. Skrepnek has been engaged in as an advisor or committee member spans almost 50 PharmD, MS, or PhD candidates. He has delivered more than 50 professional presentations which include research podiums, continuing medical and pharmacy education, and executive training programs.
Service
Dr. Skrepnek is actively engaged in service, and is involved in numerous committees and positions. He is the advisor to Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society, co-advisor to the Kappa Psi Fraternity, and is a member of the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Rho Chi. He serves in the position of editor for the peer-reviewed journal Current Medical Research and Opinion® (CMRO) and is an ad hoc reviewer for numerous scientific journals. In 2005, CMRO’s publishing group received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, which has been denoted as the United Kingdom’s most prestigious award for business performance. He additionally has served as a consultant to numerous organizations and is a member of Standard & Poor’s Society of Industry Leaders and Gerson Lehrman Group’s Healthcare Council.
