Martha (Martie) P. Fankhauser, is a clinical professor in the department of pharmacy practice and science at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and provides clinical services in psychiatry at the University Physicians Healthcare Hospital at Kino Campus in Tucson, Ariz. She has worked at UA since 1982 and was the program director for the ASHP accredited speciality residency program in "Neuropsychiatric Pharmacy Practice" from 1993 to 2004. Martie has trained 12 pharmacy specialists in the residency program and is a preceptor to more than 24 PharmD students each year in the psychiatry/neurology/pain clerkship program. Martie was involved with coordinating the Annual Neuropsychiatric Pharmacology Update in Arizona from 1994 to 2005. In 1997 she became a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FASHP).
Her primary clinical interests are the care of neuropsychiatric patients and in consulting on difficult-to-treat patients, and those with co-morbid medical and psychiatric disorders. Clinical and research interests include autistic disorder, Tourette's disorder, eating disorders, women's mental health, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perimenopause and menopausal mood disorders, geriatric psychopharmacology, pain management, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders and substance abuse disorders. Special interests include the relationship of nutrition, exercise, sleep and hormonal changes on neuropsychiatric disorders and the impact of neurotransmitter activity; polypharmacy of psychotropic agents; pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic drug interactions; and gender differences in prescribing classes of psychotropic agents.
