Dr. Timmerman's work at The University of Arizona was in biodiversity prospecting and drug discovery. She retired from UA in July 2005. She is currently a faculty member at the University of Kansas.
Biodiversity prospecting offers a valuable opportunity to directly address one of the most important relationships between biodiversity and human health -- our dependence on nature for medicine. Drug discovery from natural products, if appropriately designed and carried out, can provide economic incentives for the conservation of the diversity of plants, animals, and microorganisms on Earth. While natural products drug discovery has a long history, the idea that this process could yield conservation and development benefits is relatively new.
