Meeting Minutes

June 11, 2002

NCPA met today with members representing approximately 30 different organizations from the University of Arizona in the Deans office to discuss how the college should best remember the events of 9-11 on the first anniversary. Many different ideas were discussed as to what should and should not be conveyed. Since the college has many foreign students the idea of recognizing how the events of 9-11 have effected different nationalities is important. Many students from the Middle East want everyone to know they do not support the terrorist actions and want to move forward in a positive way. They feel they have been victims as well as those who have died in the twin towers. The idea of a memorial that represents unity, diversity, peace, and non-violent expression of emotion should be allowed expression. The event should allow individuals to see the event from an educational stand point and self evaluate their own understanding of others. It was noted that the event should give respect to those who have experienced loss and be a solemn experience that moves people forward in a positive united way. Each organization will be asked to help with the events of that week, which will fall out on RUSH week. The following ideas were discussed and further meetings will be held as the anniversary of 9-11 approaches as to what exactly NCPA and other organizations on the U of A campus will be expected to contribute.

1. Plan event free of politics

Related info for upcoming events: This is Stefanie Reeves, Student Liaison and member of the Student Advisory Committee for NCPA at the U of A. I am writing this to encourage you to attend the NCPA national convention in Nashville, Tennessee this October 19th through 23. Rudolph Guliani will be speaking at the convention and there will be a slew of activities for student attendees. I will definitely be attending. It really should be a blast between the forum discussions; social party (including a dance contest) a strep testing certification program and speakers. NCPA convention is unique in that it offers programming specifically for students and registration is absolutely free. That is right, there is no registration fee to attend if you are a member of NCPA! That means that you can apply for the dean's travel money award and use it to defray travel costs or food costs. Contact me for more information or check out the NCPA website at ncpanet.org you can also contact Tom Murry the student liaison at the national office. I especially encourage our new officers to attend! The students I talked to at the SAC convention in Washington DC this summer who had attended said it really was a blast. So, please consider doing something new this year and come to the NCPA convention with me and Guliani. -Stefanie Reeves
