PhD candidate speaks at International Convention
Katherine Block, a PhD candidate in the drug discovery and development graduate track, traveled to San Diego to speak at the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) International Convention in early September. Block, a recipient of the P.E.O. Scholar Award, represented the 170 women who received P.E.O. scholarships of $15,000 in the last two years. Block, who is developing novel treatments for cancer involving DNA repair and angiogenesis, spoke of her research and her scholarship to a crowd of about 3,000 people.
Graduate student receives research fellowship
Mark Canet, a first-year student in the pharmacology and toxicology graduate track, received a University of Arizona Science Foundation Arizona Graduate Research Fellowship. The award includes a stipend of $30,000 plus a $5,000 tuition grant for the 2009-2010 year. As part of the award, the Graduate College will pay his remaining tuition costs. The award is sponsored by the nonprofit organization Science Foundation Arizona.
Bootman, Schneider speak at FIP Conference
Dean J. Lyle Bootman and Philip Schneider, associate dean for academic and professional affairs at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, spoke at the 69th International Conference of the International Pharmaceutical Federation. The conference, which took place in Istanbul, Turkey, in early September, centered around responsibility for patient outcomes. Bootman presented “Economic Consequences of the Know-Do Gap” during a symposium about the disparity between everyday practice and best practice. Schneider, who is chairman of the board of pharmaceutical practice at FIP, spoke about American Association of Health System Pharmacists surveys during a symposium about conducting and using surveys to advance hospital pharmacy.
