Health and Pharmaceutical Outcomes graduate student Srujitha Marupuru, PharmD, presented research on Use of Melatonin and Melatonin Receptor Agonists for the Treatment of Insomnia in Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis at the 2018 ACCP Global Conference in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Marupuru conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of melatonin and/or ramelteon in improving sleep outcomes in older adults with chronic insomnia. Findings indicated that melatonin and ramelteon decrease sleep latency and improve sleep efficiency and sleep quality. The effects of these agents are modest but they seem to improve their effect on sleep efficiency over a prolonged duration. Co-authors on the project included graduate student, Mira Patel, MS, Assistant Professor, Ashley Campbell, PharmD, and Associate Professor and Assistant Dean, Jeannie Lee, PharmD.
