Med-Start Health Careers Health Program is a summer academic enrichment program for any 11th grade Arizona high school student interested in a health career. The unique program is built upon educational and community partnerships. This early outreach health career exploration program addresses the critical need for physicians and other health providers in Arizona and demonstrates the value of diverse partnerships in meeting workforce needs.
David Lee, BSPharm, '77, is a designated campus colleague and assists Dr. Tong with coordinating PharmCamp, a summer program that engages middle-school aged youth, teaching them about possible careers in the health sciences. Formerly, he was employed at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy as a clinical instructor teaching first-year pharmacy students Pharmaceutical Calculations and Pharmacy Practice Lab and Lecture. In the lab and lecture portion of the course, he reviewed state and Federal pharmacy law, teaching aseptic technique, compounding skills, and discussed current pharmacy news and trends in practice. Lee helped students learn to distinguish between brand and generic prescription drug names, available dosage forms, adverse and side effects, and counseling information for the top 200 drugs dispensed in the United States. He was also the faculty adviser to Phi Delta Chi.
