COP makes strong showing at AzPA

The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy made a strong showing during the awards and recognition session at the Arizona Pharmacy Association (AzPA) annual convention held in Tucson in late June. Attended by more than 500 individuals in the pharmacy profession, the convention is the largest annual pharmacy meeting in the state of Arizona.

COPers Honored

J. Lyle Bootman, dean, and Richard Herrier, professor, were both inducted into the AzPA Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes Arizona pharmacy pioneers who have been instrumental in advancing the profession of pharmacy by promoting the importance of innovation and integrity in the field. Rufus Lyman, first dean of the college; Dennis Messier, a former COP preceptor; and Henry “Hank” Winship, BS Pharmacy 1961 and former faculty member, were inducted posthumously.

The inaugural class of AzPA fellows was announced at the convention. Receiving fellowship honors were the nine past presidents of the AzPA, eight of whom have connections with the COP: Jerome Wohleb, preceptor; John Musil, PharmD 1994 and member of the COP National Advisory Board; Terry Daane, preceptor; Crane Davis, PharmD 1995; Linda McCoy, preceptor; Mark Boesen, PharmD 1995 and Medication Management Center (MMC) staff member; Kelly Ridgway, preceptor; and Kevin Boesen, PharmD 1996, director of MMC and COP assistant professor.  

Andrea Arellano, CPhT, MMC, received the AzPA Technician of the Year Award for excellence and professionalism.

Amy Kennedy, COP assistant professor, took home the Excellence in Innovation Award sponsored by Upsher-Smith Laboratories for demonstrating significant innovations in her pharmacy practice.The Exemplary Patient Care Award for serving as a role model in the delivery of patient care went to Carol Rollins, PharmD 1987, COP preceptor, and director of a PGY2 residency.

Jon Glover, PharmD 1992, received the Pharmacist of the Year Award, which honors an Arizona pharmacist who has demonstrated outstanding leadership for the profession of pharmacy and the AzPA.

Metta Lou Henderson, BS Pharmacy 1961, MS 1966, and PhD 1978, received an AzPA honorary membership in recognition of her 50-plus years as a pharmacist and leader in the profession.

Dyan Cherry, a COP preceptor, took home the Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year Award sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual Companies.

Preceptors Kelly Green Boesen, PharmD 2000, and Sandra Leal were each awarded a Pharmacy Appreciation Award for their trail-blazing campaign to recognize pharmacists as healthcare providers.
