Bachelor of Science (Honors I) 1990-1995
PhD (Medicinal Chemistry) 1996-2001

Current Project: 2002-

The current project involves a structural analysis of the various types of secondary DNA structures, such as G-quadruplexes, using molecular biology techniques and spectroscopy. The G-quadruplexes of interest can form in the guanine-rich nuclease hypersensitive elements that are located in the promotor regions of some oncogenes and their role may include transcriptional activation or deactivation of these oncogenes. Hence various drugs that can stabilise the specific G-quadruplexes formed in the different oncogenes are also being investigated.

Previous Projects/Experience:

PhD Project

Novel bidentate diamine ligands and their corresponding chiral platinum(II) complexes were developed and synthesised and the interactions of these complexes with DNA were studied using computer based molecular modelling methods and direct binding to DNA and shorter oligonucleotides.

Other Projects

The waters of Australian caves were studied using analytical techniques and these water environments were modelled using computer simulations to gain an understanding of the development of caves and the impact of pollution on cave water systems.

Hobbies:

Netball and Windsurfing
