PhPr 815G - Infectious Dideases Rotation

Goal
To provide the pharmacy student with an introduction to the treatment of infectious diseases.
Objectives
At the completion of this rotation, the student should be able to:
- Discuss the indications for use of the major classes of anti-infectives, including the penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, macrolides, antifungals, sulfonamides, vancomycin, antiviral agents, antituberculars, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, metronidazole, and monoclonal antibodies.
- Recommend a specific anti-infective and appropriate doses for a specific infectious process and defend the recommendation.
- Discuss the rational use of antimicrobial agents for surgical prophylaxis.
- Discuss the rational use of antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal agents for the treatment of the neutropenic patient, and other immunocompromized hosts.
- Discuss the rationale for the selection of a specific antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal regimen for each infectious disease patient being followed.
- Discuss the rational use of combination anti-infective therapy and when combination therapy is rational.
- Discuss the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases of patients following on services.
- Discuss the role of a consult service.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the student during this rotation shall include the following:
- Be present at the hospital Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Participate in infectious disease rounds.
- Monitor patients, as assigned by preceptor, being followed by the infectious disease consult service.
- Provide drug information to the house staff and attending physicians on the infectious diseases service as requested.
- Provide at least one overview of a specific anti-infective and/or class of anti-infectives on infectious disease rounds as requested.
- Meet with preceptor regularly to review patients and anti-infective therapy.
- Attend microbiology rounds as conducted at the site.
- Attend infectious diseases clinic as available at the site.
- Perform other functions as assigned by preceptor.
