For the first time in several years, Tucson Area IHS has opportunities for pharmacists. We have 3 current facilities and one new facility opening within the next several months.

Sells Indian Hospital is located about 60 miles from Tucson and is a 34 bed hospital and ambulatory care facility.  The pharmacy staff consists of 6 pharmacists and 3 technicians. The hours are from 8 AM to 6:30 PM M-F, utilizing a four-day work week.  The pharmacy is fully automated with ScriptPro Central and phone-in refill service, and Pyxis installation is anticipated soon in Inpatient and ER.

Inpatient pharmacy coverage consists of business hours during the week and Saturdays, and on-call telephone consult coverage overnights.
Most of the pharmacists live in Tucson and take advantage of the van pool for the commute.  On-site housing is available as well. 


San Xavier Health Center is an ambulatory care clinic staffed by 3 pharmacists and 1 technician with full automation with ScriptPro Central and phone-in refill service. Pharmacy hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, M-F.  San Xavier is located in Tucson.


Santa Rosa Health Center is an ambulatory care clinic staffed by one pharmacist and is about 100 miles from Tucson or 45 miles from Casa Grande.


San Simon Health Center is our brand new facility and will be staffed by 2 pharmacists.  It is located about 100 miles from Tucson and on-site housing will be available. This facility is also located about an hour and a half from the beaches of Mexico.


Pharmacy is well-supported locally by administration and medical staff. We have pharmacists actively involved in many initiatives including Anticoagulation Clinic, Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation, and the IHS Chronic Care Collaborative.

Southwest Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP) -Tucson, Arizona

The Southwest Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP) in Tucson, AZ, the newest and most automated of the seven VA CMOPs, is seeking full and part time pharmacists. Both contract and federal pharmacist positions are available. These positions are hired through RS Staffing or the Department of Veterans Affairs. The hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The CMOP in Tucson is a very highly automated facility providing prescribing processing for Arizona and Southern California. The salaries as a contract pharmacist or VA pharmacist are competitive within Tucson and the surrounding area. Those pharmacists hired as VA pharmacists are eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program and/or placement into a different status for annual leave depending on experience.

The pharmacists function as Staff Pharmacists in CMOP located at the CMOP Tucson, AZ.  The staff Pharmacist must be a licensed pharmacist (in any State) whose primary functions will be clinical evaluation of medication orders processed by the CMOP, checking pharmacy technician's/aid's and/or pharmacy student's work associated with the filling of mailed prescriptions, problem resolution with facilities utilizing CMOP, quality control analysis for CMOP activities, and responsibility for operation of the CMOP in the absence of the CMOP Supervisory Pharmacist.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a United States citizen, a graduate of a degree program from a college or school of pharmacy approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE), or prior to the establishment of ACPE, have been a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) as well as a current pharmacy license (any state).  You must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test before appointment into this position. The Winslow Indian Health Care Center (WIHCC) is accepting applications for two staff pharmacist positions. WIHCC is an outpatient clinic serving a patient population of 20,000 in the high desert of northern Arizona. The pharmacy staff consists of 7 energetic pharmacy technicians, and 6 pharmacists.

The department fills approximately 500 prescriptions a day between a main pharmacy in Winslow, and 2 satellite pharmacies in Leupp and Dilkon on the reservation. Winslow is about a 45 minute drive from Flagstaff, Arizona and about a 3 hour drive to Phoenix. Our hours of operation are 8am-6:30pm Monday through Friday only. Opportunities for carpooling from Flagstaff and alternate work schedules are possible as well.

Of note, WIHCC is using an electronic medical records system, so providers enter in all their own medication orders, which allows pharmacists to spend almost all of their time educating patients in private counseling rooms.
The medical staff is enthusiastic, and great to work with. We are in a new pharmacy location that is more than twice the size of the previous space.
We recently sent all of our pharmacists to the APhA immunization training program, so we have begun administering immunizations to our adult patients as part of our patient care activities.
We use automation from Parata systems, and we will soon initiate a telepharmacy program for remote clinics in January.
