Remember how important your clinical rotations were when you were a student pharmacist? Remember how being out there "in the real world" helped you clarify your career goals and understand your own talents better?

Who are preceptors?

Field-based faculty are the backbone of colleges of pharmacy. Some of the best in the country have helped The University of Arizona rank Number 4 nationally among all colleges of pharmacy. For a list of current UA College of Pharmacy experiential faculty and their rotation sites, see the Preceptor Directory.

Now you may be in a position to offer these valuable experiences to future pharmacists, and to get to know some of the best and brightest of the next generation. Sign up now.

Volunteering to precept students on clinical rotations is very rewarding personally, but because it does take a lot of hard work, the college has compiled a list of "special incentives" just for experiential faculty members.

Benefits to Preceptors

Faculty appointments
The University of Arizona is currently rated as 4th in the nation among colleges of pharmacy (America's Best Graduate Schools 2006, compiled by U.S. News and World Report). Your appointment as a faculty member to the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science will enhance your résumé and credentials. And as a clinical faculty member, you will help us reach that coveted top spot in the rankings soon.

Library access
The University of Arizona Health Sciences Library is a one-stop online resource available to all preceptors. With access to approximately 4,000 journals, you are sure to find the information you need in full text format. Obtaining such broad access on your own would cost thousands of dollars. E-mail Lynda Klasky (klasky@pharmacy.arizona.edu) to sign-up for library access.

Free continuing education programs
We'll help you enhance your clinical skills as well as your teaching abilities through free continuing education programs. CE is offered regionally to give you several opportunities to attend live programs and network with other preceptors. Many of these sessions are developed by preceptors for preceptors. Therefore, you may have the opportunity to present such a program and receive an honorarium.

Southwestern Clinical Pharmacy Seminar
The University of Arizona Annual Southwest Clinical Pharmacy Seminar for pharmacists practicing in any health-system setting is filled with valuable continuing education programs. This two-day seminar is also a great opportunity to network with other pharmacists. Preceptors receive a discounted registration rate.

For more information, see the college's Continuing Education section.

Special Recognition

Each year we recognize one preceptor for their outstanding dedication, service, and teaching ability as "Preceptor of the Year." One newer preceptor, one who has a been a preceptor for 5 years or less, is recognized as the "Rookie of the Year." Additionally, preceptors are rewarded for extended service to the college. Certificates and lapel pins are awarded for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service.

University CatCard

Preceptors may purchase a CatCard from the CatCard Office in the UA Student Union. The CatCard allows access to some additional University Services.

Campus Recreation Center

Preceptors interested in getting their work-out on may sign up for membership. Information is available at: http://campusrec.arizona.edu.

Season tickets are available at a discount. Tickets may be ordered from the Centenial Hall Box Office.
