College of Pharmacy Welcomes a Clinical Pharmacist to the Experiential Team
Our most recent addition to the experiential education team is Jenene Spencer. Jenene is no stranger to The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy (UA COP), as she has been affiliated with the UA COP in a variety of ways for over fifteen years.
Jenene graduated from the UA COP in May 1998. During her last year of pharmacy school, she worked with UA COP faculty member Rick Herrier and Fry's Pharmacy to develop the first community pharmacy residency program in Arizona, where she served as the first resident. Upon completion of the residency, Jenene became the primary residency preceptor.
As a clinical pharmacist with Fry’s Pharmacy, Jenene provided clinical services, such as wellness screenings, immunizations, medication therapy management, and disease-management programs in addition to traditional community pharmacy services. Throughout her eleven years with Fry’s Pharmacy, Jenene was a clinical instructor and preceptor with the COP. She precepted pharmacy students on rotation at Fry’s Pharmacy as well as during community outreach clinics, trained pharmacy students in how to provide community outreach screenings, and provided various guest lectures for the College.
Jenene was named Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year in 2000 and Innovative Pharmacist of the Year in 2003 by the Arizona Pharmacy Alliance. She received The University of Arizona Alumni Association’s Outstanding Young Alumni Volunteer Award in 2006. She is an active member of the Arizona Pharmacy Alliance and the American Pharmacists Association.
Jenene’s primary responsibilities in this new position are to work closely with the students during their introductory rotation experiences (IPPEs) by providing on-site supervision, mentorship, and evaluation at various sites such as long-term care facilities and outreach health fairs, to work with Rebekah Jackowski to develop and evaluate innovative introductory pharmacy practice experiences, and to work with the experiential education team to provide preceptor support and development.
If you would like to contact Jenene, you can reach her at 520-621-7872.
IPPE and APPE: New pharmacy acronyms to learn
The Accrediation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has recently expanded the requirements clinical rotations. ACPE mandates that at least 5% of the curriculum be dedicated to introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE). We have recently revised our curriculum to accommodate this new requirement. The IPPEs begin the second semester of the first year and continue through third year. If you would like to help with IPPEs, please contact Rebekah Jackowski at (520) 626-0499.
The advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) must represent at least 25% of the curriculum. These rotations will continue occur during the fourth year as 7 six-week clinica rotations. We are currently in the process of scheduling these experiences for the Class of 2011. If you are a preceptor and haven't yet submitted your 2010-2011 availability, please contact Rebecca Malone at (520) 626-4506 with your requests.
Preceptors Enjoy Remote Library Access
Please remember, one of the benefits available to use is remote access to the Arizona Health Sciences Library. The process for accessing the library has recently changed. If you are interested in gaining access, please contact Lynda Klasky (520-626-5067) for details.

Questions about the website, EMS, or rotations in general?
Please feel free to contact Kevin, Rebecca, Rebekah, Jenene or Lynda if you ever have questions about locating a topic on our Web site, accessing or using our electronic system, or rotations. We are here to help you.
Rotation Web site (EMS)
Every preceptor and student has his or her own unique log-in that grants access to rotation lists, important forms (evaluations, intern hours, professional leave requests, etc.) and contact information. Other than the "Intern Hours Report," which still requires signatures and hard copies be sent to the Office of Experiential Education, this entire process is Web-based.
