Rufus Lyman, MD

Rufus Lyman

Dean, 1947-1950

Dean Lyman was trained as a physician but devoted most of his professional life to pharmacy. A nationally known pharmacy leader and educator, Dr. Lyman was the founder and editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education before being offered directorship of the School of Pharmacy at the UA. Dr. Lyman accepted, stating that, "the opportunity to start another pharmacy institution on its way from the very beginning was a challenge so stimulating I could not refuse." Dr. Lyman was on duty the day the school opened on Sept. 1, 1947. He quickly became popular with students and pharmacy professionals alike. During his tenure, he advocated for a five-year curriculum and guided the school to becoming a full-fledged college on July 1, 1949. In June 1950, the college's first class graduated and Dr. Lyman retired.
