College of Pharmacy in Phoenix
A general outline of current and anticipated College of Pharmacy activity related to expanding programs to the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, an emerging academic health center in downtown Phoenix.

The College of Pharmacy opened an office on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus in 2007 in the building that also houses the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). A core of key administrative staff there direct Phoenix-based operations and plan the expansion of post-degree, PhD and PharmD activities to come.

Our Plans
- The College of Pharmacy has developed a Phoenix-based clinical clerkship program that began in 2007 for fourth-year PharmD students.
- The College of Pharmacy will recruit faculty renowned for expertise in individualized medicine research and practice. They in turn will attract excellent students to this emerging discipline. A small number of doctor of pharmacy graduates will enroll in 2009 and 2010 as residents and fellows in a clinical pharmacogenomics program. The general focus of the clinical pharmacogenomics program will be on delivering individualized drug therapies to patients. By translating the remarkable scientific innovations of genomics from the research lab to the patient, the faculty, pharmacy residents and fellows in the program will contribute to significant advances in health and health care.
- The College of Pharmacy will establish a four-year PharmD degree program and PhD training in the pharmaceutical sciences on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus when education and research facilities have been built and are available for occupancy (estimated 2012 and 2013, respectively).
The College of Pharmacy will expand to Phoenix in the following stages:
During 2008-2011
Phoenix clinical clerkship program
The college has developed a Phoenix-based clerkship program to accommodate fourth-year students in the greater Phoenix area for their entire final year of PharmD preparation. During their clinical training year, this cadre of approximately 40 students performs health promotion/community service activities similar to those that now take place in Tucson (health screenings and fairs, health education with youth, medication counseling). These clerkships give Phoenix employers greater exposure to quality applicants for their pharmacy openings, provide free health services to Maricopa residents and are especially attractive to students who wish to permanently locate in the Phoenix area.
Specialized PharmD residency/fellowship in pharmacogenomics
PharmD graduates will enroll in a pharmacogenomics residency or fellowship. The research track fellowship will prepare graduates to conduct translational patient-oriented research for academic or industry positions. The clinical track residency will prepare graduates to analyze needs, determine appropriate doses and monitor the outcomes of patients receiving therapies based on pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomic characteristics. Students will receive stipends during their two years of training.
During 2012-2013
PhD degree program in pharmaceutical sciences
The college will enroll PhD students to work with faculty in medicinal chemistry, clinical toxicology, clinical therapeutics, pharmacogenomics and other pharmaceutical sciences.
PharmD program
A full, four-year PharmD program that allows students to complete all their pharmacy training in Phoenix will be implemented. Plans call to begin with an entering class of 40 students in Fall Semester 2012 and grow to entering classes of 100 by Fall 2016.
